Low Cost Positioning

Uplink Time Difference of Arrival (U-TDOA) is a network-based positioning technology for mobile networks that is based on timing of received signals to locate a mobile phone.

U-TDOA uses advanced triangulation techniques and dedicated measuring equipment (LMU) to determine the precise location of a mobile phone. Unlike competing E-OTD technology, U-TDOA works with any 2G or 3G mobile phone and does not require special hardware or software in the handset.

In 3G networks, where the UL signal is based on WCDMA technology, U-TDOA achieves excellent performance and accuracy. Accordingly, the 3GPP organization had adopted U-TDOA and developed formal standards for 3G U-TDOA in location based applications.

Percello offers a very low cost and low power LMU (Local Measurement Unit) that addresses the key challenge of reducing equipment costs for U-TDOA solutions, which require numerous LMUs. Based on the field-proven PRC6000 and PRC6500 baseband processors, this very cost effective and highly accurate positioning solution meets the needs of emergency services and other positioning applications.

As shown in the diagram below, Percello's low-cost LMU is implemented in Stand Alone SMLCs (Serving Mobile Location Centers) that support U-TDOA technology using the Iupc protocol.
